Students Rally Because Of G-20 Arrests In Oakland

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― A rally on the University of Pittsburgh campus in Oakland brought people together to protest the actions of police during the G-20 Summit.

More than 100 people were arrested near Schenley Plaza in Oakland on Friday. Organizers of the event say they want to know what crime was being committed.

"Our goals today are simple," Justin Wasser, an organizer, said. "We want to tell our stories and seek answers, our purpose is to heal and to begin reconciliation and most importantly to demand accountability."

Some of people that were there Friday claim they weren't there protesting, but just got caught up in the crowds.

"Right now I have four staples in my head because I decided to go out that night and just observe what was happening in my city and I don't really feel like that's fair," Emily Rowe, a freshman, said.

People signed a petition that requested an apology from the city, among other things.

"Getting those charges dropped for everyone who was non-violently arrested," Anthony Brino, a Pitt student, said. "There [are] stipulations in our petition that anyone who was involved in property damage or violent behavior is not included in here."

Edith Bell, from Highland Park, was not arrested but marched in a parade that went through downtown.

"Having grown up in Nazi Germany, the overpowering police was very much reminiscent to my youth," she said.

Albert Petrarca attended the rally. He was arrested for sitting in front of a SWAT vehicle on Penn Avenue last week.

"It was outrageous that there was a police state being imposed on Pittsburgh and I was tired of running," he said.

Pittsburgh Police Chief Nate Harper said on Saturday he felt the police acted appropriately.

About six police officers were stationed across the street from Thursday's rally in Oakland.
