Former Duquesne Basketball Players Suing School
Former Dukes Shawn James and Kojo Mensah are suing Duquesne University, saying the school failed to properly prevent the September 2006 shooting
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
Nearly two years after an on-campus shooting after a school dance injured five Duquesne University basketball players, two of those former students are planning to file a lawsuit against the school.
In October, William Holmes of Penn Hills was sentenced to 40 years in prison for the September 17, 2006 shooting that injured Sam Ashaolu, Shawn James, Kojo Mensah, Aaron Jackson and Stuard Baldonado.
Baldonado has already filed a civil lawsuit against Duquesne, charging that the school did not provide enough security to ensure his and other students' safety.
Now, Shawn James and Kojo Mensah are suing the university, saying the school failed to properly prevent the shooting.
They say the incident could have been prevented if school security monitored the dance.
Both players believe their injuries reduced their chances of being drafted by the NBA.
