Local Universities Use Emergency Alert Systems
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
A gunman opened fire in a lecture hall at Northern Illinois University, killing five people before taking his own life.
The university says its emergency plan worked.
Many Pittsburgh area universities also have similar emergency plans and alert systems in place.
Chatham University started its system, e2Campus, in September. It sends out emails and text messages to cell phones. They can send out information instantly to every student and faculty member.
Chatham students are required to sign up for the alerts.
Additionally, the school has a back up voicemail system that will call campus phones.
The university sent out a message earlier this week to close campus because of the bad weather.
The University of Pittsburgh also started an electronic alert system after the Virginia Tech shootings.
Carnegie Mellon University's Alert Now system has been in place for a few years.
Point Park University, Robert Morris University, Duquesne University and Indiana University of Pennsylvania all have electronic alert systems in place.
