Protecting Your Pipes from Freezing

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Blustery winter weather can wreak havoc on your plumbing; but homeowners can prevent thousands of dollars in property damage by protecting their pipes from freezing.

Consumers can keep the plumber away by taking a few simple precautions: keep the water running -- hot and cold -- and open your cabinet doors.

The most vulnerable pipes are those that run along the outside of your house.

Faucets connecting to those pipes should be left running -- a little more than a drip throughout the day and night.

If your pipes have already frozen, experts warn that the wrong tools can make a bad situation even worse.

While blow torches are obviously a bad idea, even hairdryers can be dangerous. If water starts to leak out while youre holding the electrical device, you risk the danger of getting an electrical shock.
