Expert: Tips Can Keep Your Car Rolling In The Cold

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The freezing cold temperatures could cause problems for your car if it's not properly maintained.

Burt Young, from Pine Hollow Service in the West End, says car owners need to pay attention to their tires, batteries and windshields.

He says in this area, batteries keep their life for about three and a half years on average.

"If you look at your battery and you see that it's a little bit older than that, you may be headed for trouble," Young explained.

To find your battery's age, he says to look at the top of it and you should see the date and the year that the battery was installed.

To keep your windshields clear, Young suggests using a good quality windshield wiper solvent – not water because it can freeze.

Additionally, drivers should make sure they have windshield wiper blades in good condition.

Young says it's not essential to have snow tires; however, people need to check the amount of tread on their tires.

If you can stick a penny in the groove of your tire and if Abe Lincoln's head is covered, Young says you're probably in good shape.

He also advises drivers to always check their oil, coolant levels and get regular tune ups.
