Grinch Strikes Twice At Clearview Mall

CENTER TOWNSHIP (KDKA) ― For the second weekend in a row, a grinch has stolen Christmas cheer from a local mall.

At Clearview Mall in Butler, robbers have struck a few times.

The first hitting up the money bags of the Santa Train Ride and then robbing a train operator at knife point and stealing cash and bank deposit bags.

Many consider the mall the place to be.

"The mall itself is a wonderful place to shop and you feel safe," said mall shopper Hazel Rattigan.

But over the weekend, things outside the mall were anything but safe.

Police say Saturday evening train operator Matthew MacDonald was leaving the mall when someone approached him and held him up at knife point in the parking lot.

It happened at the same mall Rattingan shops at.

"I just can't believe it but a lot of times desperate times call for desperate measures," said Rattigan.

That's not the only incident.

Police say just last week someone stole more than $550 dollars from the holiday train ride.

Rattigan just took her granddaughters for a train ride fairly recently to bring in the holidays.

"The kids enjoy it and I can't imagine someone would take that money," said Rattigan.

"That's a children's ride, that's just not right. I know it's the holidays and people are hurting for money," said mall shopper Amanda Ruckert.

Ruckert isn't necessarily surprised by the news.

"I think the mall is safe for employees but there's too many people hanging out here at night," said Ruckert.

But she will be taking extra steps to ensure her family's safety this holiday season.

"It's just scary because me and my kids come up here. I don't want to be with them walking in the pitch black to our vehicle," said Ruckert.

Mall officials declined our interview requests and police are still investigating.
