Human Remains Found In Butler County

MUDDY CREEK TWP. (KDKA) ― There was a disturbing find in a wooded area in Butler County.

A construction work road crew was in Muddy Creek Township doing paving work prior to a bridge implosion and one of the workers discovered an intact human skeleton off Route 422 near the Route 528 exit ramp.

Officials still don't know if the person died from an accident, foul play, or a suicide.

Bill Ream, of I.A. Construction in Zelienople was the first person to see the bones. He told KDKA-TV he knew immediately they were human and there were some clothes on top of the remains.

State Police Lt. Steven Ignatz of the Butler barracks said authorities are combing missing person reports, looking for any possible connections.

Ignatz said the badly decomposed remains were those of an adult male.

Dr. Dennis Dirkmaat, from Mercyhurst College's department of forensic sciences, was also at the scene with about a dozen graduate students from the Erie campus.

Even though only bones were found, Dirkmaat says they should help officials determine the age and ethnicity of the individual.

The skeleton was removed from the scene and transported to Mercyhurst College for further tests and examination.
