DEP Plans To Test Arsenic Levels In Butler Soil

BUTLER (KDKA) ― The Department of Environmental Protection is preparing to test more soil from a Butler neighborhood.

In May, officials discovered arsenic levels in the soil far above the residential safety standard at Father Marinaro Park and nearby homes.

The arsenic is believed to be from the Franklin Glass Plant which was on the site until it burned down in the 70s.

On Tuesday, the DEP and the Department of Health told residents the arsenic does not pose an immediate health risk but starting Monday, they'll be taking samples at nearly 100 markers to better assess the danger.

The soil sampling will take place over the next two weeks. The DEP hopes to have the results ready to present to the community sometime towards the end of July or early August.

The DEP says no one has gotten sick to their knowledge, but they're still advising residents and those who use the park to wash their hands frequently, leave their shoes at the front door and keep close watch on children playing in the park.
