Missing Elderly Man From Clay Twp. Found Alive

CLAY TOWNSHIP (KDKA) ― A man reported missing in Butler County has been found alive.

According to state police, 87-year-old Burton Duerring, of Clay Township, was last seen Tuesday afternoon in a wooded area walking his dog near his home on Beaver Dam Road.

"He was walking his dog, he came down to get his mail and something distracted him and he got confused and we knew he was missing about 1:30 p.m. – the dog came back but he did not," Susan Law, Duerring's sister-in-law, said.

After scouring the 100-acre area around his home, officials were about to call off the search Wednesday afternoon when a helicopter spotted Duerring in a swampy area near railroad tracks.

"They looked down and they were able to discover the gentleman in this swamp laying down," State Trooper Steve Ignatz said. "Initially, they thought he was dead but he sat upright and we were able to get in there with the help of the rescuers and get him extracted from that situation."

"I didn't expect it. In the woods all night like that – I didn't expect it," Burton Duerring, Jr., said. "It's a miracle and that's all I can say about it."

During the search, he visited a psychic for clues about his father's location.

"It just totally blew my mind that she said that about dirty, unclean water and that's exactly the area he was found in," he said.

The family says that police in a helicopter found their father before they passed along the psychic's information.

Duerring remains at Butler Memorial Hospital.  His wife says he's a bit confused and doesn't remember what happened.

The family thanks all the volunteers who helped with the search.
