Mortar Shell Found In Beaver Falls Garage

BEAVER FALLS (KDKA) ― A Beaver Falls man found a mortar shell while cleaning out his garage.

According to the Army, the rounds have an effective killing range of about 90 yards.

Police moved in quickly.

"[I] left the garage area. I went back to my patrol car and called the Beaver County 911 Center, made arrangements for the Allegheny County Bomb Squad to come up and remove the ordinance from the garage," Beaver Falls Police Captain Scott Chichy said.

The discovery is not that unusual. Apparently, a couple of them have turned up recently.

"We had a gentleman actually bring in a bag full of what appeared to be bazooka rounds – brought it into the station and set it right on the counter and wanted to know what to do with it," Chichy said.

Several years ago, someone found what looked like a live pineapple grenade in a dumpster.

Police tell KDKA these kinds of items are usually long forgotten war souvenirs.
