Software Package Helps Seniors DriveSmart

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― When it comes to educating mature drivers, a video game seems like an unlikely choice.

But Bevi Powell of the AAA Motor Club says she sees it working.

"It's very addictive, it's very similar to the situation you find yourself in when you play Solitaire or any other game because you keep trying to beat whatever your last score is."

The agency has been promoting a software package called DriveSmart. Designed by Posit-Science, it looks like a computer game, but is designed to sharpen reaction time and the driver's field of vision.

Priced at $139, AAA has been offering discounts to members. However, it does not replace driver retraining programs, such as defensive driving courses. Still, Powell calls it "an extra tool" to ensure safe driving habits.

"By 2025, 25% of the drivers on the road will be 65 or older."

"Everybody needs a little bit of improvement."
