'Cash For Clunkers' Ending Soon

CRANBERRY TWP. (KDKA) ― The popular "Cash For Clunkers" program is coming to the end of the road.

For Keith Kroner and his sales team at Cranberry Chrysler Jeep Dodge, the program was great way to pump up sales after Chrysler filed bankruptcy.

Now that the program is ending Monday at 8 p.m., they're glad to see it go.

"I'm totally relieved it's done. It's been a paper nightmare for us," Keith explained. "We actually front the money, we then get reimbursed from the government and that's the issue with a lot of dealerships."

And at this point, they don't have many eligible cars left to sell.

"We have two other dealerships but we can draw on their inventory as well but the inventories are very low. It's concerning that somebody's coming out now to do the cars program is going to be hard pressed to find something that actually works--we only have a few vehicles still on our lot that still work for the cars program," Keith said.

But car shoppers with clunkers on their hands are still hoping to find something in the few days left.

"I thought about it but I really didn't know if mine qualified, because it's so confusing," Robert Simmons said. "I came down, asked him, he said I qualified, but this is actually the fourth one that we stopped at because everyone is already picked through - there's really nothing left. He said he had one left - that was about it."

As "Cash for Clunkers" winds down, that will likely be the case at dealers across the country.
