Local Drivers Trade In Clunkers For New Cars

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Local car dealerships have seen a boost in business since the start of the government's Cash For Clunkers program.

"Going into Saturday before the program officially started we had just about 100 customers that were either committed or very close to being committed through the clunker program," Rob Cochran of #1 Cochran said.

Customers came out in droves.

"They were trying to pace the customers and get them in and out of the door I was just one in the line," Larry Lang, from South Park, said.

He arrived at South Hills Chrysler Kia on Saturday in a rusting '97 Wrangler worth $150.

"They got me the $4,500 and then Kia gave me another $3,000 on top of that," he said.

"We sold 23 cars over the weekend and that was Friday-Saturday," says Larry Winter of South Hills Chrysler Jeep Kia.

But as fuel efficient cars and small SUVs leave car dealers' lots, there is a concern that the money will run out for the government program.

"One day they are going to walk in and they're going to say, 'Whoops we're out of our billion dollars,'" Winter said.

"So the key is for customers that want to take advantage of it is to get in," Cochran said.

"If someone can't understand that this is like the deal of the century, I mean how many times does the government give you money back," Lang said.
