Local Pontiac Dealer Faces Uncertain Future

HOUSTON (KDKA) ― The future is uncertain for car dealerships across the country, including a local family-owned dealership.

Bob Arnold, Sr., grew up at Arnold Pontiac GMC in Houston and so did his son, Bob, Jr.

Bob, Jr., has always assumed he'd take over the dealership and like his dad he is anxiously waiting to hear from General Motors.

"I know the business very well so we're going to try to keep it going," he said.

"Not knowing is worse. We don't know where we stand - that's the hard part," Bob, Sr., said.

Any decision to pull the Arnold's franchise would be felt throughout the community which boasts the Arnold Community Park.

"We will attempt to continue, sure, with used cars and GMC trucks. I don't know if we can," Bob, Sr., said.

So every day they wait for the phone call or mail to arrive.

Shumway: "And yet you're smiling."

Arnold: "What are you going to do? It's life and life happens. Sure I'm not happy but I don't want to be bitter, so I have to keep going."

An industry analyst out of Detroit tells KDKA's John Shumway dealerships like the Arnold's where there is no nearby competition and that have a brand that will stay like GMC, have a better chance at survival than stand alone Pontiac dealers.

But with several thousand dealers to cut, you won't find anyone flying the Pontiac flag feeling too confident.
