High School Teams With America On The Move

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― One local high school is teaming up with America On The Move in Pittsburgh to get teens, parents, teachers and the community healthier.

Officials with Seton LaSalle High School and America On The Move have set up a walking trail on campus.

"We saw this as a wonderful opportunity to get the kids healthy and active," said Dr. John Jackicic, of America On The Move.

Seton LaSalle principal, Sr. Patricia Laffey says the nature trail has been set up in the shape of a staple.

"There is something about getting out in nature that is just so relaxing and peaceful," Sr. Laffey says.

Brian Klisavage, the school's activities director says he hopes parents, alumni and the community all come out to use the trail.

He adds that school officials want to get the students out on the trail after lunch.

"As teachers, we're looking at the studies that show if you get moving after lunch you'll be more aware," he says. "We think that the students will be more aware in the classroom if they walk after lunch for 10 minutes or so."

Meanwhile, Dr. Alan Yeasted, of Seton LaSalle's advisory board says getting kids active early means they will more likely lead healthier lives.

"It's very important from a medical standpoint that we act early in these children's lives to influence their behavior," Dr. Yeasted said, "so that not only from the nutritional standpoint and a dietary standpoint, but also an exercise standpoint that we keep them in good physical condition so they end up with much healthier, happier lives as adults."
