November 14th marks World Diabetes Day.  This annual day of observation was created to raise awareness for diabetes. All around the world people will be lighting up their communities as beacons of hope for the 246 million people worldwide who are living with diabetes.

Enter the "Light Up Your Community" Contest

Join the Pittsburgh Regional Initiative for Diabetes Education (PRIDE) as we light up western Pennsylvania on November 14th.  Below you will find some suggestions for how you can participate. 

  1. Light up your house, church or school with spotlights or twinkle lights.
  2. Light luminaries in your yard.
  3. Light a candle in your home, workplace or other setting of your choice. 
  4. Join together with your neighbors and have a lighting ceremony in your neighborhood.
  5. Contact your local politicians and ask how you can light up a landmark in your community.

Submit your photo on how you recognized World Diabetes Day, and you can win the following prizes:

Participating non-profit organizations can win:  
1st Prize: $150 donation
2nd Prize: $75 donation
3rd Prize: $50 donation

Private citizens can win prizes, courtesy of Panera Bread:
1st Prize: Panera Catered Party for 15 people
2nd Prize: Panera Bread for a year
3rd Prixe: $50 Panera Bread Gift Card

Pittsburgh Regional Initiative for Diabetes Education

Diabetes affects nearly 800,000 Pennsylvania residents each year.
PRIDE (Pittsburgh Regional Initiative for Diabetes) in cooperation with the University of Pittsburgh Diabetes Institute provides diabetes prevention programs for those at risk and education to people who are diagnosed with diabetes. Visit the  PRIDE website to find a diabetes program near you.
